Five Reasons I Still Reach for ChatGPT as an AI Engineer

The practical features that keep ChatGPT in my daily workflow — even with other models on the table.

With a new model seemingly released every other week, I have stopped trying to track every leaderboard and benchmark. What I care about is what actually survives my daily workflow. ChatGPT has stayed in that workflow for reasons that are less about hype and more about the edges of the tool.

The Canvas view and the Code Interpreter make coding feel iterative, not transactional. Most models will write code for you; ChatGPT lets me ask for a specific line edit, run a Python snippet on the spot, and inspect the output without leaving the conversation. For quick data checks and small prototypes, that removes a lot of tab-switching.

Memory gives threads a sense of continuity. I can tell it to remember my preferred stack, a style guide I keep using, or a dataset I keep referencing, and those details persist across sessions. It sounds small, but it removes the “first day of a project” feeling every time I open a new thread.

Custom GPTs are useful for boring, repeatable tasks. I have a few for formatting JSON, checking SQL style, and writing alt text. Once the instructions are set, I just drop in a file and get a consistent output. It is not a full agent, but it is a very reliable helper.

The OpenAI API ecosystem is boring in the best way. The SDK is well documented, streaming works, function calling is reliable, and integration examples are everywhere. Boring infrastructure is good infrastructure when you are building something that needs to ship.

Multimodality is actually integrated. I can paste a screenshot of an error, ask about a diagram, or hand it a handwritten note, and the model replies in the same thread. Other tools often handle this through separate steps or plugins, which breaks the flow.

Claude is excellent for long, careful reasoning. Gemini is great inside Google Docs. But for a single interface that blends coding, memory, and quick prototyping, ChatGPT still wins on convenience. I use the others for specific jobs; I keep ChatGPT as the default.

It is not perfect. It still hallucinates, still over-explains, and still needs sharp prompts. But it is the place I start most days. For an AI engineer, that default matters.
