Kashmir is often described through its beautiful mountains, lakes, gardens, and valleys. But during my visit, I realized that Kashmir is not only about its natural beauty. It is also a place filled with history, spirituality, and stories that connect us with our past. One of the places that touched me the most was Gurudwara Chatti Patshahi in Srinagar, associated with the sixth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.
When I reached the Gurudwara, I immediately felt a sense of calmness. Away from the busy tourist places, the atmosphere here was peaceful and simple. I entered with a feeling of curiosity, but as I sat inside and listened to the Gurbani, that curiosity slowly turned into a feeling of gratitude and peace.
Remembering the Sixth Guru
Gurudwara Chatti Patshahi is connected with Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru. The name "Chatti Patshahi" itself means the Sixth Sovereign, referring to the sixth Guru.
According to Sikh tradition, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji visited Kashmir in the early 17th century. The Gurudwara is traditionally associated with Mai Bhagbhari, a devoted Sikh woman who deeply wished to have darshan of the Guru. It is believed that Guru Sahib visited her and stayed at this place.
There are also traditional stories connected with a well and Mai Bhagbhari's devotion. Whether we look at these stories as history or as part of Sikh tradition, they beautifully reflect the deep faith and love people had for Guru Sahib.
Standing there made me think about how different Kashmir must have looked hundreds of years ago. Yet, the memory of Guru Sahib's visit has continued through generations.
More Than Just a Historical Place
For me, this was not simply another tourist destination to tick off my Kashmir list.
It felt like a place where history and spirituality came together.
I sat quietly for some time and looked around. The peaceful environment, the sound of Gurbani, and the feeling of being in a place connected with Guru Sahib made the visit special.

One thing I particularly appreciated was the simplicity of the Gurudwara. Like other Gurudwaras, it carries the beautiful values of seva, equality, humility, and sharing. The concept of langar reminds us that everyone is welcome, regardless of their background.
It made me reflect on how powerful these simple values are even today.
A Personal Moment
While travelling, we usually take photographs of beautiful places so that we can remember them later. I also took pictures during my Kashmir trip, but my memories of this Gurudwara are not only connected with photographs.
I remember the feeling.
There was something comforting about sitting there quietly and taking a break from everything outside. Sometimes, we travel far away from home to discover beautiful places, but along the way, we also discover a little more about ourselves.
My visit to Gurudwara Chatti Patshahi was one of those moments.
It reminded me that travelling is not always about seeing more places. Sometimes, it is about understanding the history behind a place and feeling connected to something greater than ourselves.
Taking the Memory Back Home
As I left the Gurudwara, I carried more than just photographs with me. I carried a feeling of peace and a deeper appreciation for Sikh history.
Kashmir gave me many beautiful memories, but visiting Gurudwara Chatti Patshahi was one of the experiences I will remember differently.
The mountains showed me nature's beauty, Dal Lake gave me peaceful moments, but this Gurudwara gave my journey a sense of faith, history, and reflection.
For me, that is what made this visit truly special.
Some places you visit, some places you photograph, but a few places stay with you even after you leave. Gurudwara Chatti Patshahi was one of those places for me.
