SAP BTP is where you build the things that should not live inside your ERP. That is the whole idea, stated once, without acronyms.
The four practical uses
- Extensions — custom apps and side-by-side logic that keep the core clean.
- Integration — connecting SAP to non-SAP systems with managed connectivity.
- Data and analytics — bringing data together for reporting and planning.
- AI services — the runtime for AI scenarios that need your own data.
When you do not need it
If your requirement is a standard configuration change, a Fiori app that already exists, or a report available in the delivered content — you do not need a platform project. Reach for BTP when the requirement genuinely sits outside the core.
# A typical CAP project starts embarrassingly simply
npm i -g @sap/cds-dk
cds init purchase-approvals
cd purchase-approvals
cds watchThe technology is approachable. The discipline of deciding what belongs where is the hard part.
